Show from the Week of 4/8/2006
Mandalas was formed in 1999 by Ramir, former member of Groove Crew, a band which released two albums on Liquid Records. Thanks to a computer, a mixer, a sampler and some acoustic and electronic instruments, a collection of personal compositions, on the edge of electronics and rock, were born. At the end of 1999 Mandalas recorded 'THINGS LEFT UNSAID' - Tsunami Music's first release.
Being influenced by artists such as Captain Beefheart, Sly Stone and Asian Dub Foundation, Mandalas' new sound walks further and further away from [p]Groove Crew. Its new sound blends digital technology, groove, funk, drum'n'bass and rock guitars.
Shortly after, a drummer, a bassist and an FX and sampler controller were recruited. Having rehearsed for a while, they recorded the singles 'METAL MAGIC ZONE/DREAM MACHINE', presented in their first live performances.
In Autumn 2001, Mandalas record "Ooze", an EP including some remixes from DJ's, musicians, and close friends of the label, Tsunami Music.
Later on, a new member and old friend, providing a Fender Rhodes and a Hammond, joins the band, giving a new groovy mood, close to the 70's funk sound which so much fits in Mandalas' new era.
During August and September 2002, MANDALAS record their new album "The golden shore", moving Tsunami's studio to an old mill right in the middle of the countryside. Surrounded by charming nature, they found the environment and necessary inspiration to reflect and achieve the sound that the band begins to call "Rural grooves". After its release, Mandalas keep playing around the country next to artists and bands such as 12Twelve, Fun-da-mental, Kuraia, Marc Parrot, Alex Martin, Unfinished Sympathy, O'Funkillo, Gadegang, La Kinky beat, and so on. However, Mandalas changes line-up due to the impracticability of being in two bands at the same time. Bassist and drummer are replaced, and in come Lucas (bassist) and César (Guitarist).
As soon as its new live act is defined, Mandalas start playing all around the country showing and surprising with their new compact and funky sound.
Currently, Mandalas is on the road and prepares what will be their new album,
: Old and new, acoustic and electronic, but always a groovy link between past and present (or should we say, future?).
