Show from the Week of 4/21/2008
Composer, producer, programmer and performer, Genji Siraisi is a rhythmic jack-of-all-trades. His drumming has been the foundation for jazz/funk group Groove Collective since the band’s formation in the mid 90s, which in turn gave birth to the Acid Jazz scene in NYC at the first Giant Step events. Just now hitting the mainstream, Groove Collective was nominated for a 2007 Grammy. Genji has worked with such notables as Tupac, Masters at Work, Digital Underground and Naked Music. He’s also produced albums for Warner, London/Payday and Giant Step, amongst others. His album 'Censorsh!t: Pt.1 Bad Monkey' takes a post-modern (and often post-apocalyptic) stance with a mixture of downtempo grooves, glitch-hop, ambient textures and minimal dancefloor tracks, all seamlessly blended into a bold and cinematic journey.
What started as a simple remix project for Genji’s 2007 release, 'Censorsh!t', grew into a massive 12 track release which times out at an hour and twenty minutes (but will be available at an EP price). It features new mixes, remixes and interpretations from Balún, no luck club, Q-Burns Abstract Message, Alex Moulton, and Pushtobreak (Genji Siraisi’s alter ego), plus a brand new exclusive track from Genji. Also included in the album bundle is a Pushtobreak live set.
Surviving Freedom: Uncensored Remixes & Naughty Bits - LINER NOTES
I first met Genji about 10 years ago. I was a huge fan of his (now Grammy-nominated) ensemble, Groove Collective, which was born out of the infamous early Giant Step events in NYC. Soon we were playing together in a group called Itaalatron. Although short-lived, the band’s lineup now blows my mind, and I felt lucky to be included. Frontman Itaal Shur (Grammy-winning songwriter) was backed by Lisa Shaw (Naked Music) and Lucy Woodward (the pop star), Mark Anthony Jones (one of the funkiest guitarist players on the planet), rocker Chris Ryan on bass, myself on turntables, and Genji on the kit.
I’ll never forget the rehearsal when Genji confided his new drum theory to me. He said something like, ”Instead of putting the “One” at the beginning of every bar, why can’t every beat be the “One”? Then you could play any crazy fill you wanted, “One, One, One, One...” The idea seemed both ground- breaking and ludicrous. I didn’t fully grasp it until years later when I heard the demos for “Censorsh!t.” Genji’s style is truly a demonstration of his theory. When you see him live, under his name or as Pushtobreak, you’ll get a whole new understanding of what it is to be a drummer in the 21st Century.
It was an honor to release his Genji’s solo album on Expansion Team Records, and an even greater honor to contribute to this remix project, with my friends Balún and Q-Burns Abstract Message. We hope you enjoy it.
May you all be the on the “One”
